Flowergasm in Delhi: Mughal Gardens

Fancy witnessing the colors of spring in full bloom but unable to book your tickets to faraway lands? If you live in Delhi, or are visiting Delhi during February/March, and want a quick detour to a fantasy land, head out to our very own Mughal Gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan, home to an awe-inspiring variety of flowers in every color of the spectrum, and feast your senses as you revel in the refreshing spring air.

The astounding varieties of flowers on display here can perhaps be distinguished by a botanist only, but then, the sheer smorgasbord of the flora here, does give us laymen a glimpse of the vast and vibrant Mother Nature. Another reason for you to visit is the recent addition to the garden-tulips, in hues of red, yellow and orange, which means that now you do not have to go all the way to Netherlands to see the tulips in full bloom! And these dainty tulips just merge in perfect harmony to the rare and exquisite varieties of rose on display, including the rare green rose. The other highlights of this year’s ‘Udyanotsav’ (the Garden Exhibition) include special theme-based exhibition of vertical garden forms and air purifying plants*. The premises are replete with many themed gardens, such as- the main Mughal Garden, as well as the Herb Garden, Bonsai Garden, Cactus Area, and the Circular Garden.

Now, drawing from my personal experience, I would suggest anyone who likes witnessing the various colors of nature, and the many hues of flowers, to give this place a visit. There will be a lot of walking involved, so do wear comfortable shoes. That, and a keen eye to see the many types of flora on exhibit, shall make your trip a pleasant one. Do note that belongings other than mobile phone would not be allowed inside and need to be deposited at the entry, so it’s best to not carry much. So hop onto a metro train, get down at Central Secretariat Metro Station, and make your trip towards this paradise in the heart of Delhi! And hurry, ‘cos the gardens are open to public from 5th February to 12 March, 2017.

Pro tip: Check out some of the roses which have rather unusual, err, funny names.

So you thought a rose can’t be macho enough? Think again.
