Every single person, whether or not a nature enthusiast, would find themselves being overcome by the incredible cuteness of the playful Dolphins. And if these adorable creatures have motivated you to go dolphin-spotting in India, do visit the Chilika Lake in Odisha- the meeting ground of a large variety of migratory birds and home to the Irrawady Dolphin.
A little intro about me; I’m a hard-core nature enthusiast who cherishes to witness nature in its pristine, untouched form and spot rare, exquisite species of flora and fauna in the process. And I’m a motivated traveller too- having charted a journey from Delhi to Odisha just to catch a glimpse of dolphins; and boy, I wasn’t disappointed! After just 10 minutes of the ferry ride, my mother gives up on any such chance of dolphin sighting (we have previously been to many national parks in search of the Big Cat, with no luck); and at that very instant, as if to dispel the prophecy that my mother had just claimed, a dolphin spirals out of the shining waters and quickly makes its way back in, in one of the most graceful acrobatics nature can offer! This is followed by spotting even more dolphins- our tour guide tells us that we are indeed very lucky to be witnessing so much of the ‘dolphin action’ at one instant! I trace this fetish to a childhood memory, of reading about the Irrawady Dolphins in Chilika Lake in a magazine, and feel rewarded, for my journey of thousands of kilometers finally proved to be fruitful!
The best place to start a trip to Chilika is from Puri, a lovely beachside city and also the seat of the Jagannath Mandir. There are plenty of stay options in Puri and buses that operate from Puri to Chilika, both state-operated and private. Take out a day from your Odisha itinerary and explore this wonderland for nature enthusiasts!
